Z mode intersatellite data were acquired during a rendezvous of the topside sounder satellites Isis I and Isis II near the north pole on July 15, 1976. The significance of the obtained data is discussed. The Z mode of magnetoionic propagation is the lower-frequency branch of the right-hand-polarized X mode. It is useful to investigate how this mode behaves in the ionosphere because, like the whistler mode, it has an open refractive index surface and is, therefore, of interest from the point of view of antenna characteristics and wave-particle interactions. The observations of interest are the shape, delay, and frequency content of the received pulses.
