Current knowledge of the non-linear effects associated with beam-plasma interactions is reviewed to determine how the electron velocity distributions would be modified. Many of the observed differences follow quite naturally from the general effects to be expected. There is no reason yet to reject the idea that auroral electrons are accelerated by a parallel electric field although more work is needed on detailed comparisons to confirm these conclusions.
