The basic types of gravitational experiments, their significance, and the techniques used are reviewed. The following classification of tests of gravitation in terms of the contradictions or inconsistencies to theory they seek to expose is suggested: tests of the invariance of conventional constants, tests of the validity of the special theory of relativity, tests of the equivalence principle and the validity of metric theories, tests validating a particular metric theory, and tests that look for gravitational effects of moving matter. The possibilities offered by space technology in studying gravitational and relativistic effects are examined, and several present and future gravitational experiments in space are discussed, including a project to measure the 'frame-dragging' predicted to result from the earth's rotation.
