The 2001 Mars Odyssey spacecraft will look for evidence of both warmer temperatures and wetter climate in the past on Mars' surface. Features such as channels that resemble dry riverbeds, possible deep layers of sediment, and the remains of a large shallow ocean suggest water covered parts of Mars long ago, but scientists still debate the matter and want more data. Specifically, Odyssey will look for the chemical signature of water-created minerals, study the processes that sculpted channels and other geological features, and look for signs that some water is frozen in the Martian soil.
