Infrared spectroscopy is a valuable tool for characterizing refractories and volatiles in cometary atmospheres. Recently, the detection of carbonate minerals and PAHs was reported in the 5-37 micrometres spectra of the Deep Impact ejecta of comet 9P/Tempel 1 observed by the Spitzer Space Telescope (Lisse et al. 2006, Science, 313, 635). We present here sensitive 5.5-7.6 micrometres spectra of comet C/2003 K4 (LINEAR) obtained with Spitzer. The ν2 vibrational band of water is detected with a signal-to-noise ratio > 50. Model fitting of ν2 band H2O fluorescence emission shows that water wholly accounts for any emission in-excess of the continuum at the wavelengths of PAHs (6.2 micrometres) and carbonate ( 7 micrometres) emissions.
Water also dominates the pre and post-impact Spitzer 5.5-7.6 micrometres spectra of 9P/Tempel 1. We present a re-analysis of these spectra and discuss whether there is hint of detection of PAHs and carbonate emissions in this spectral range once water emission has been properly modelled.
