On August 2007, we detected 22 GHz water maser emission from the merging galaxy NGC3256, using the 70-m Tidbinbilla telescope with a resolution of 50 arcsec. Only interferometric measurements will allow us to discriminate between emission from molecular material around one of the two nuclei detected in the system and a prominent star forming region in the large scale disk. Due to the particularly-high luminosity, with respect to that typical for kilomasers, the former possibility would possibly constitute a further argument in favour of the presence, suggested by some authors, of a buried low-luminosity AGN. We propose to measure the maser with the ATCA in its 6km configuration in order to pinpoint its location with respect to the other main centers of activity in NGC3256.
