Different concepts of the accelerating atmospheric torque of Venus are argued by Kundt and by Ingersoll and Dobrovolskis. The latter authors (1978) dispute Kundt (1977), who restates his reasons for believing that the atmospheric torque is determined from observations to within some 30% while the thermal response time has a value of about a day. Dobrovolskis and Ingersoll suggest that the torque is dominated by eddy momentum transport so that the coupling between the upper and lower atmosphere is uncertain by orders of magnitude. They also suggest that the thermal response time parameter has nothing to do with the speed of sound and that its value can approach infinity for the undamped case.
