Rotation curve studies indicate that large amounts of dark matter may be present in disc galaxies. It is assumed that this dark matter is distributed in a flattened spheroidal form. Perturbations due to nearby galaxies, clusters, etc. would then cause changes in the orientation of the axis of symmetry of this dark halo. As a result, a torque is exerted by the halo on the orbiting elements in the disc. Different orbits precess at different rates, since the exerted torques and orbital angular frequencies vary. Consequently, a warp develops. It is shown that at the nodal points of the warp, the "crowding of orbits" leads to an increase in the pressure and density of the gas, which is significant even for small warps. This increase of pressure can lead to enhanced star formation. A mechanism is also proposed for the phenomenon of "star bursts" based on the density and pressure increases due to the warp.
