Smaller and novel alternatives to wheels or large legs as a means for moving small scientific packages around the Martian surface are proposed. These proposals include: walking robots on the scale of 2 kg down to a few grams; flea-like robots in the few gram range which make random ballistic motions in order to move around; tumbleweed like robots in the few gram range which rely on being blown around by Martian storms. Each of these approaches brings unique constraints to the types of science that can be done, the type of mission control that can be applied externally, the ways in which data can be communicated, and the options that can be employed for delivery to the surface. These questions are examined for each proposed means of locomotion, the technological bottlenecks are identified, and mission scenarios are examined.
