The interaction between the relativistic jets of SS433 and the radio nebula W50 is analysed on the basis of recent observations. It is found that SS433 may be surounded by a cloudy interstellar medium, of the type described by the three-phase model of McKee & Ostriker. In addition, it is concluded that W50 is more likely to represent an expanding interstellar bubble, driven by a strong stellar wind from the binary companion of SS433, than a supernova remnant. It is argued that the dynamics of the expansion is probably controlled by the inertia of evaporated interstellar clouds within the bubble. Among the observed features which find a natural explanation in this picture are the spatial distribution of the diffuse X-ray emission, the sphericity of the radio shell and the asymmetry of its eastern and western extensions, the concentration of the line-emitting filaments near the radio shell, and the appearance of blue wings in the optical line profiles. This interpretation can be incorporated into a self-consistent evolutionary scenario in which the formation of SS433 is attributed to a supernova explosion in the galactic plane.
