A hypothetical evolution of a massive star and its surrounding shell of gas and dust is checked on the basis of currently available sufficiently detailed IR and radio observations for some galactic H II regions. Recent observations of W3 (a giant H II region located in the Perseus arm) are discussed and interpreted, along with the compact H II regions (regions of low mass which surround young OB stars) and IR sources within W3.
