Low-dispersion spectroscopy and narrow-band CCD imaging has been obtained for the planetary nebula (PN) candidate W 16-185 in order to clarify its nature. These data, in particular the emission-line spectrum, lead to the conclusion that it is a heavily reddened, low-excitation PN rather than a compact H II region. However, the IRAS luminosity and colors of the associated point source are rather unusual for a PN.
