We report the advantages and potentials of VSOP-2 observations for studying the central engine of M 87. Extremely high angular resolution of VSOP-2 of 38 μ-arcsecond will provide us the unique opportunity to observe M 87 with spatial resolution of 0.0031 pc. This corresponds to around 10 times the Schwarzschild radius so that VSOP-2 can be a powerful tool to reveal the accretion disk and jet launching site, and investigate the formation, acceleration and collimation of the jet in connection with the physics of the accretion disk. A polished plan based on these studies will be proposed as one of the Key Science Programs of VSOP-2 mission in the category of Active Galactic Nuclei.
Key Science Programs (KSPs) are research in important science area performed under the responsibility of the VSOP-2 mission. VSOP-2 Science Working Group begins to investigate potential KSPs. KSPs will be peer-reviewed by VSOP-2 International Science Council (VISC-2).
