In the last three years there has been an explosive growth in our knowledge of Jupiter, Saturn, their satellites, rings and surrounding environment. Many new satellites had been found, unexpected structure in the ring systems, and a variety of phenomena with satellites in the atmospheres which are still testing our ability to explain them. The `Voyager' mission will be a landmark in the history of the exploration of the Solar System, which is reviewed in the paper, and follows the text of the second Herschel lecture.
