VOStat (Virtual Observatory Statistics) project aims to remove the paucity of non-proprietary software for sophisticated statistical analysis of astronomical data. It is accomplished by a collaboration between astronomers and statisticians, and using specialized software for astronomy as well as the huge open-source R package. The prototype toolkit consists of an easily extensible distributed web services-based framework transparently accessed via an open-source client GUI. As a result it is especially useful in the Virtual Observatory (VO) environment where datasets with billions of points in hundreds of dimensions are becoming commonplace. Currently offered functionality includes multi-resolutional k-dimensional trees for clustering and outlier detection and more traditional techniques such as principal component and survival analysis.
