Vortices on the world sheet of a string moving in a simply connected space lead to a continuous dependence of critical indexes (in particular, critical dimensionality) on the parameters of noncontracting cycles. The latter have limiting values due to a phase transition related to a loss of conformal symmetry. Various applications are discussed.
