THE recent debate1,2 over alleged volatilization losses from lunar sample 14310 is fundamental to the interpretation of lunar petrogenesis. If alkalis, water and oxygen have been lost in significant amounts from lunar lavas, it would eliminate from consideration one class of interpretations which presuppose the cooled rock compositions are directly indicative of the chemical constitution of the lunar interior, and hence of a particular model of lunar origin.
