Under appropriate conditions, molecules of cosmochemically abundant
elements can act as volatiles (that is, undergo phase changes) and hence
play a dominant role in energy transport processes on the surfaces of
solid bodies. The author outlines the important effects of volatiles on
climate and surficial evolution of these satellites.
