The halogen content of the SNC meteorites is determined, and these new results (along with published data) are used to estimate the halogen content of Mars (thought to be the source of these objects). The data are presented in extensive tables and graphs, characterized in detail, and shown to be consistent with the two-component planetary-accretion model of Ringwood (1977 and 1979) and Waenke (1981). It is inferred that hydrogen (produced by the reaction of water with metallic iron) and other volatiles (including the gaseous halogens) had already escaped from the early Martian and earth atmospheres before the present atmospheres began to form (by degassing of the interiors), and that volatiles added to the atmospheres later were retained to a much higher degree.
