The essence of the Virtual Observatory concept is to allow the scientists near real-time access to multi-wavelength data. It is reasonable to expect to also have access to scientific papers in which the data were utilized and to the observing programs in which the data were obtained.
The shortcoming of this is that it still relies on human intervention to discover content and derive interesting conclusions. In order to optimize the process of discovering new knowledge we have to move beyond this first step. One approach is to capture the context of the science papers and to make it computer processable. Strategies include categorization of content based on full text analysis, but could also be extended to a re-mapping of the papers into a representation language. Database search techniques, already available for VO applications, can then be applied to discover correlations or contradictions.
