This paper presents the result of numerical simulations we performed in the framework of the VLT-Planet Finder project. We derived the performance of the instrument regarding the direct detection of extrasolar giant planets. Moreover, the simulations were useful to assess the sensitivity of the instrument to many parameters and sources of degradation. Finally, the technical development of phase mask coronagraphs is briefly discussed.
