It is shown that, during sudden commencements, bursts of VLF emission have the same morphological features as SCA events: (1) a marked minimum is observed at 16-18 LT and a marked maximum is observed at 20-22 LT in the diurnal course of the probability of occurrence; (2) the occurrence of VLF bursts and SCA absorption depends on the level of geomagnetic activity preceding the SC; and (3) under conditions of low geomagnetic activity just before SC there exists a certain threshold value of geomagnetic-field jump in the Delta-B equatorial plane at which the excitation of VLF bursts and the occurrence of anomalous SCA absorption are possible. It is concluded that these findings serve to confirm that SCA absorption during SC is associated with cyclotron instability arising due to a drastic compression of the magnetosphere.
