Despite the clear importance of gamma ray emission in the blazar phenomenon, neither the physical radiation mechanism nor the location of the emitting region have been definitively identified yet. To further progress in this field, we initiated last year observations with multi-frequency polarization VLBI simultaneous to monitoring by ground-based Cerenkov telescopes. VLBI data obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array in March 1998 at 5, 8.4, 15 and 22 GHz will be presented. They reveal a substantial decrease in the total and especially in the polarized flux of the core of Mrk 421 within about three weeks. The core almost vanishes in polarized flux at 5 GHz at our second epoch on March 28th. Such a drastic change in the VLBI core polarization may be related to the gamma flare observed by CAT on March 24/25th, three days before our VLBA run.
