We propose a single 12-hour VLBI pilot observation of a small sample of bright radio sources chosen from our ATCA/SWIRE CDFS (Chandra Deep Field South) survey. The sample includes strong radio sources which are undetected in the infrared. This rare class of sources is inconsistent with current galaxy evolution models, and VLBI will help determine the origin of their radio emission. We have also found sources with the IR characteristics of a star-forming galaxy but the radio properties of an AGN, and suspect these are deeply obscured AGNs. The VLBI observations proposed here can distinguish between AGN and starburst, and will enable us to determine the nature of these sources, and thus help understand the process of early galaxy evolution. If this pilot project is successful, we will subsequently propose similar observations on other CDFS sources, and deep VLBI observations in the GOODS field.
