A description is presented of the measurement or visualization of ultrasonic wavefronts. A wavefront can carry information about an object being visualized or a transmission medium being traversed, both of which may be opaque to light. Attention is given to optical diffraction, optical interferometry, chemical methods for the detection and visualization of ultrasonic fields, the detection and visualization of an ultrasonic field by liquid crystals, thermal methods, electromechanical methods, and also mechanical methods. The latter are most popular in the areas of acoustic holography and microscopy.
