The importance of visual observations of Mars, obtained both from earth and from meteorological satellites, is discussed, and the production of drawings of the surface is considered. Distant visual observations over time can detect changes in the surface and atmosphere of the planet, and they permit the analysis of such specific phenomena as the behavior of the polar cloud covering and the formation of dust storms. A method for using visual data to obtain accurate drawings of Mars is presented. Suggestions include the use of the Vaucouleurs visual photometric method for estimating intensity and tonality and the use of different micrometers for determining the dimensions of different types of features.
