The lecture entitled Visiting the top modern observatories has been prepared for the coming International Year of Astronomy 2009 and covers such topics as: what one can see through a telescope; the thrills of using a telescope; the basic principles of telescope construction; the history of the telescope: its invention and development through 400 years; Earth's atmospheric transparency; radio telescopes; the top 10 optical telescopes of the planet; Ukrainian observatories; large telescopes of the near future; space telescopes and their discoveries.
