The considerable literature that has built up on the scietific objectives for interferometry and the performance of ground, space and lunar interferometers is summarized. While the expected performance of ground based systems is considerable, some areas appear reserved for space implementation. Areas in which space interferometry might be thought to offer an important advantage over the ground are addressed. Interesting opportunities for a first interferometry mission include precision astrometry, solar imaging of active galactic nuclei, stellar surfaces, and blue companions.
