As the amount of available solar data increases and queries become more complex, the importance of having a simple and intuitive user interface grows exponentially. Recent years have seen a renaissance in the technologies and techniques available to web application developers. By taking advantage of the power of modern JavaScript libraries, a new version of the Virtual Solar Observatory's web interface aims to provide a significantly faster and simpler way to explore the multitude of data repositories available. Querying asynchronously serves not only to eliminate bottlenecks resulting from slow or unresponsive data providers, but also allows for displaying of results as soon as they are returned. Implicit pagination and post-query filtering enables users to work with large result-sets, while a more modular and customizable UI provides a mechanism for customizing both the look-and-feel and behavior of the VSO web interface. Finally, initial work with a novel interface based on the open-source Adobe Flex framework provides an interesting alternative to the web interface. In addition providing a web-like interface that is capable of being run outside the browser, the Flex-based approach provides significantly more computational power when working with large result-sets.
