Scientific paper

Observations made as a result of Project Viking are reviewed with attention to studies of the Martian surface by the Viking Orbiters. An overview is given in the following fields: planetary obliquity and orbital characteristics, especially as they pertain to temperature and ice-cap fluctuations; atmospheric and albedo variations; surface structures, e.g., rills, plains, craters, mountains, and volcanoes; and surface composition (using data supplied by the Viking Landers). Also discussed is the possibility that water once flowed on Mars in large amounts.
