The (2, 1)s - (1, 1)a V2 = 1 line of vibrationally excited ammonia at 140.1435 GHz has been searched for toward a sample of 15 Galactic sources which are known to have a large abundance of highly excited ammonia. This line had been previously found in Orion-KL (Mauersberger et al. 1988). Emission or absorption at the expected frequency is found in five of these sources, increasing the total numbers of detections to six and lending confidence in the identification of this transition with ammonia. However, the possibility of a misinterpretation cannot be ruled out because no other transition of vibrationally excited ammonia has been measured so far. Toward NGC 7538, the transition is found to be in absorption. A declination cut toward Orion-KL shows that the line peaks on the ammonia-rich 'hot core' source. Vibrational excitation temperatures were estimated using measurements of the ammonia ground state inversion transitions towards these sources. Values of T(vib) varying between 160 and 700 K were found. From a comparison of the observed radial velocities with ground state NH3, the best estimate of the rest frequency is nu = 140141.6 + or - 0.6 MHz.
