A method is developed for calculating the vibrational temperatures and vibrational-level distribution functions of N2 and CO2(nu) in the daytime in the midlatitude E and D regions. Seasonal variations of the vibrational temperatures are investigated, and the form of quasi-stationary distributions of metastable N2 and CO2(nu) over the vibrational levels is determined. It is shown that the population of the first vibrational level of N2 is of the Boltzmann type, and that metastable N2 does not affect O(+) concentration below 150 km.
