The water molecule has been observed in a great variety of astrophysical objects through pure rotational, ro-vibrational and maser transitions. Among the molecular data necessary to interpret the H2O spectra in the interstellar medium, rates for collisional excitation of H2O by H2 are crucial parameters. We report here preliminary results for the vibrational de-excitation of the bending (010) mode of H2O by H2 using quasi-classical trajectory calculations and the H2O-H2 potential energy surface of Valiron et al. The classical approach is chosen as an interesting alternative to exact but prohibitively expensive coupled-channel calculations. Rates are found to be significantly larger than those currently used in the literature.
