A pupil segmentation approach for telescopes is presented which achieves a maximum spatial resolution by recentering and selecting a series of short exposures. A resolution of 0.26 arcsec has been experimentally achieved using recentered and coadded subpupil short exposures and a frame selection rate of 10 percent. The gain in resolution is greater than three with respect to classical direct imaging involving a whole pupil and 65 percent selection if the recentering and selection algorithms are applied to the whole pupil image. These results demonstrate the relevance of pupil segmentation combined with recentering and selecting algorithms for high-resolution imaging. Applications to telescopes of the 2-m to 4-m class located at sites with excellent seeing are promising since it is now possible with this technique to obtain a spatial resolution on the order of 0.2 arcsec over fields of about 1 arcmin.
