The atmospheric Cherenkov Imaging Technique has been established as the most effective method of detecting TeV gamma rays from cosmic sources. VERITAS is one of the new generation of arrays of telescopes that will give an improvement of flux sensitivity of a factor of ten over previous TeV telescopes such as the Whipple 10 m telescope. Phase-1 of VERITAS will consist of four 12 m aperture telescopes with sophisticated cameras at a dark site in southern Arizona. Two telescopes have been tested at a temporary site and their performance meets the design specifications; it is hoped to have the full array completed by the end of 2006. The status of the project and its scientific goals will be reviewed.
VERITAS is supported by D.O.E, N.S.F. and the Smithsonian Institution as well as the funding agencies of Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
