Variations of the depth of the main ionospehric trough as a function of heliogeophysical conditions are investigated. In disturbed periods the depth of the trough is found to be maximal at hm. In quiet and slightly disturbed conditions the depth of the trough changes little with height in solar maximum years, whereas a significant increase in trough depth with height is observed in years of low solar activity.
