Evidence is presented for vertical motions - perpendicular to the plane - in spiral galaxies of the ScI type. This evidence comes from a study of the H Ι velocity fields in two face-on galaxies, NGC 3938 and NGC 628. After removal of the circular rotation components, motions are found to be present which the authors interpret as vertical. This result is borne out by a quantitative analysis of the residual velocity fields using a Fourier transform. The patterns found for the vertical motions are a ring and a spoke in NGC 3938, and a weak spiral in NGC 628.
