This thesis presents the first results of an emission-line survey: the data reduction, the search for emission-line objects, and their classification. A total of 174 emission-line galaxies were found in one field. The author finds that the emission-line galaxy sample reaches to lower absolute magnitude (MB ≅ -14 to -13) than similar continuum-selected samples (MB ≅ -17 to -16). The emission-line galaxy frequency is about a factor of three higher than the continuum-selected galaxy frequency. Therefore the luminosity function has to be normalized with a higher value or its slope is steeper than suggested by previous continuum-selected observations. There is no obvious steepening in the slope of the luminosity function; evolution of the luminosity function suggested in the literature appears not to be present in the CADIS 16H-field data. Finally, the Hα luminosity function of the sample shows an over-density compared to published values at the faintest observed line fluxes, establishing a new lower limit for the overall Hα luminosity function.
