The CNES 2007 mission to Mars is ambitious because it is versatile and vice versa. The versatility is imposed by the dual objective of this mission, which is to demonstrate technologies for a future Mars Sample Return mission and to make science : network science with the NETLANDER probes and orbital science with remote sensing payloads. For the French Orbiter, the mission can be stated as follows : - a) to carry 4 Netlander probes to Mars and then to support them as a relay for - b) to demonstrate the rendezvous and capture capability in a martian environment, - c) to perform an additional orbital science mission. Such a versatility is a real technical challenge for the design of the Orbiter and this paper shall focus on some System trades such as multiple spacecrafts vs. Single spacecraft, mission optimization vs. anticipation of a Sample Return mission, dry mass vs. Delta-V. Another focus shall be performed on system compromises concerning the sizing requirements of the spacecraft in term of attitude control, volume and fields of view, communications and computers &data handling, as well as the development approach to minimize schedule risks. Finally, a conclusion shall be developed around the gain for future of the invested effort to match the required versatility which leads to design the concept of a multi-missions spacecraft which is modular and evolutive for a large range of missions to Mars.
