Following SN1987A, analysis of the neutrino events observed in Kamiokande II and IMB revealed inter-experiment timing discrepancies of several seconds. In the event of a galactic SN, directional information, from the current generation of neutrino detectors, would primarily be provided by the ν e e- elastic scattering signal in individual detectors, and also by triangulation of the neutrino wave-front arrival times from multiple detectors. Effective triangulation requires relative inter-experiment timing differences to be small compared with 1ms. The GPS technology, employed by current experiments, is capable of providing accurate absolute timing at the 100ns level. However, GPS artifacts and errors in implementation can result in timing errors large compared to our needs. This presentation will describe a plan to measure the relative timing discrepancies of the SNEWS collaborating experiments, in order to permit triangulation, and to establish procedures such that the usefulness of any SN neutrino data would not be unduly limited by questions of relative timing.
