The development of mass spectrometers for analyzing the rare gases in the atmosphere of Venus is outlined. American and Russian mass spectrometers flown on the Pioneer Venus and Venera craft and the analytical results obtained from them are compared. Development of the vacuum systems for the mass spectrometers is discussed. The purpose for making determinations of the rare gas content of the Venus atmosphere is described, and some conclusions drawn from this data about planetary evolution are presented.
