The Fourier IR spectrometers of the Venera 15 and 16 Venus orbiters (which entered Venus orbits in October, 1983) are described, and some preliminary results are presented in graphs and tables and discussed. The instruments cover the wavenumber ranges 280-1600/cm (Venera 15, with CsI divider plate) and 400-1600/cm (Venera 16, with KBr plate) with apodized spectral resolution 5-7.5/cm and spatial resolution up to 60 km at cloud level; digital Fourier transforms are performed by onboard computers, so that either interferograms or Fourier spectra can be transmitted to earth. Band identifications (including CO2, SO2, and an H2O rotational band), the spectrum variation over the planet, atmospheric temperature profiles, cloud structures, and the estimated H2O abundance are briefly characterized.
