The gas-chromatography experiment carried by the Venera 13 and Venera 14 descent modules is described. Nine analyses of the chemical composition of the Venus atmosphere were made, beginning at the 58-km level. Preliminary estimates indicate the following volume abundances for several atmospheric constituents (parts per million): H2, 25 + or - 10; O2, 18 + or - 4; Kr, 0.7 + or - 0.3; H2O, 700 + or - 300; H2S, 80 + or - 40; COS, 40 + or - 20; and presumably SF6, 0.2 + or - 0.1. The H2, H2S, COS molecules have been identified in the Venus atmosphere for the first time.
