The measurement of the composition of the Venus atmosphere by gas chromatography on board the Venera 12 descent probe is discussed. The Sigma gas chromatograph employed utilizes a high-sensitivity ionization detector, based on the Penning effect in rare gases, with a sensitivity threshold of 0.1 ppm to pure neon. Eight analyses of atmospheric composition were performed during spacecraft descent from an altitude of 42 km to the surface of Venus, and a total of 54 chromatograms were transmitted. Quantitative interpretation of the chromatograms reveals that, in addition to CO2, the atmosphere consists of 2.5 + or - 0.5 vol % N2, 40 + or - 20 ppm Ar, 28 + or - 14 ppm CO and 130 + or - 60 ppm SO2, with upper limits of 20 and 100 ppm to the O2 and H2O concentrations, respectively. The results are found to be in general agreement with Pioneer Venus gas chromatography, however Pioneer water vapor and oxygen values are shown to significantly exceed those determined by the Sigma chromatograph.
