A method using the bisector of a spectral line profile for the analysis of macroscopic velocity fields in the solar atmosphere, based on the linear approximation derived by Canfield (1976) for the case of velocities substantially smaller than the thermal velocity, is applied to get a fully analytical solution for the case of an exponentially stratified Milne-Eddington atmosphere. Ultimate limits to the information on the depth dependence of the velocity field that might be retrieved in this way from data obtained with infinite spatial and temporal resolution are derived from the intrinsic smoothing due to radiative transfer.
