The TV system on Vega 1 and Vega 2 observed comet Halley from 4 to 11 March and transmitted about 1500 images to the earth. During closest approach on March 6 and 9 the best images of the cometary nucleus were taken from 8 - 9 thousand kilometers. The comet's nucleus is a potato-shaped irregular formation, about 14×7.5×7.5 km3 in size, whose surface is rather dark. Active emission of matter is from the sunlit side. The nucleus rotates with a period of 54±3 hours.
