The two USSR Vega spacecraft missions which passed through the dust coma of Halley's comet on 6 and 9 March 1986 allowed the first direct measurements of the spatial and temporal distribution of the masses and fluxes of dust particles whose origin is the comet's nucleus. This study is fundamental for establishing the physical processes of dust emitted from the nucleus, their propagation to form a coma, and the origin of dust jets. This letter is a preliminary report of these measurements with instruments employing a new principle of dust detection (Simpson, Tuzzolino, 1985; Perkins, Simpson, 1985) which have a high time resolution (≡4 μsec) over a large range of dust fluxes and masses.
