The Vega 1 descent module carried equipment which collected and pyrolyzed cloud aerosol particles and then analyzed the gaseous pyrolysis products by mass spectrometry. Preliminary investigation confirms that the upper cloud layer contains heavy particles, with sulfur as their main constituent. A peak at 64 amu may represent SO2(+); allowing for internal losses, the aerosol H2SO4 abundance at H = 62-54 km is estimated to be greater than about 2.0 mg/cu m. Also present in the mass spectrum are chlorine lines, at 35 and 37 amu, implying a Cl content of greater than about 0.3 mg/cu m.
