As part of our ongoing study of the spatial distribution of gas in the coma of comet Encke, a comet known for its asymmetric outgassing, we have modeled the distribution of CN in its coma as observed during its 2003 apparition. From October 22-24, 2003, we used the 2.7 m telescope at the University of Texas McDonald Observatory to obtain long-slit spectra of several radical species, including CN. The slit was rotated through several position angles, allowing us to map the spatial distribution of the observed species. We have used the vectorial model to reproduce the observed CN distribution, looking for possible azimuthal variations in scalelengths and determining whether HCN is likely to be the sole parent species of CN. We discuss the results of these modeling efforts and the implications of the results.
