In this study, three-dimensional electron density structure derived from 20-day binning of global GPS radio occultation sounding of FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC (F3/C) as well as daily regional ground-based GPS-TEC maps are utilized to study the ionospheric variations during the 2009 stratospheric sudden warming (SSW) period. Results show that the appearance and subsidence of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) are shifted to earlier local time periods, resulting in enhancement of the electron density in the morning and decrease of the density in the afternoon. Accompany with the time shifting, the global electron densities become smaller comparing with densities prior to and after the SSW period. The vertical electron density structure revealed by the F3/C shows the combined SSW effect and seasonal effect of the ionospheric density evolving from January (solstice) to March (equinox). Additionally, the ionospheric electron densities are decomposed into various harmonic components of the tidal signature. The tidal signature in the ionospheric densities shows that the migrating tides, representing around 80% of the total electron densities here, are modified with clear phase shifts. The nonmigrating components also show variations during the SSW period, indicating a longitudinal variation of the ionospheric responses to the SSW effect.
